Things to do in Speyer

While you are at the workshop in Speyer there are several interesting opportunities to explore in your free time. To help you make a choice we list some options for you to consider. These are all within easy walking distance to the conference venue.

 

Technikmuseum Speyer:

The technical museum of Speyer is the first and obvious choice since it will host the conference. Here you can view exhibits from the fields of aircraft, railroads, fire engines and ships. For example: a german navy submarine, an Antonov airplane and the russian space shuttle "Buran" are currently on display.

Please note that the conference venue is located outside of the museum and visitors have to the pay the entrance fee.

Mo - Fr  09:00 - 18:00 Uhr

Sa - So  09:00 - 19:00 Uhr

Historical museum of the Palatinate

Located close to the imperial cathedral of Speyer. This museum shows exhibits concerning the cultural history of the Palatinate (the region where Speyer is situated). Five permanent collections (Prehistory, Roman Times, Cathedral Treasury, Modern Era and Wine Museum) are on display.

SEA LIFE Speyer

Situated next to the conference venue and close to the river Rhine, the SEA Life underwater world - aquariums offer visitors a chance to explore aquatic life. The exhibit shows underwater life from the source of the Rhine up to the north sea. Tropical and mediterranean waters are also showcased.

Opening hours:

Monday - Friday: 10:00 - 17:00

Saturday & Sunday: 10:00 - 18:00

Speyer cathedral

The imperial cathedral (officially the Imperial Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption and St Stephen, in Latin: Domus sanctae Mariae Spirae) was consecrated in 1061 and is currently listed as on UNESCO's World Heritage list. It is the largest Romanesque church and considered one of the most important architectural monuments of its time.  The cathedral is located in the center of Speyer and open to the public except during church service.

The church's crypt and the emperor's tombs, where several emperors of the Holy Roman Empire where interred can also be visitied and opens 15 minutes after and closes 15 minutes prior the regular opening hours.

Christmas market of Speyer

Starting concurrently with our workshop, the historical christmas market in the center of Speyer begins. Visitors can find plenty of shopping opportunities, traditional baking and the general festive atmosphere.
