In neutron-heavy ions, the neutrons are anticipated to accumulate closer to the surface of the nucleus, known as the neutron skin effect. Measurements conducted by PREX and CREX collaborations have found the neutron skin effect in $^{208}$Pb and $^{48}$Ca ions, using parity-violating electron scattering. However, some discrepancies remain in comparison with ab initio calculations. These efforts can be extended with an alternative approach of using high-energy collisions (HIC) to probe the neutron skin effects in light and heavy ions. Conceptually, the HIC provides a great opportunity to study these nuclear structure effects as the nuclei collide within yoctoseconds, resulting in an imprint of the nuclei at the ground state.
In this presentation, we will discuss how measurements of anisotropic flow, mean transverse momentum fluctuations, and their respective correlations can be used to probe the neutron skin effect in $^{48}$Ca. We study the neutron skin effect by performing state-of-the-art hydrodynamic simulations of $^{48}$Ca$-^{48}$Ca collisions, varying the neutron skin depth and demonstrating sensitivity in the final-state observables. Additionally, simulations of $^{40}$Ca$-^{40}$Ca collisions are analysed as a reference system. Consequently, we are demonstrating the capabilities for extracting neutron-skin depths in $^{48}$Ca at the LHC and highlighting the need for future exotic collision systems.
