Description
The two experimental target stations operated by the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) for ion–matter interaction studies at GSI will be presented, with a focus on the ToF-SIMS/SNMS setup at the M1 beamline of the M-branch. The setup enables direct in-situ comparison of ion-induced particle emission under both swift-heavy-ion and keV ion bombardment using mass-spectrometric detection. Examples obtained with swift heavy ions, 5 keV Ar⁺, and 20 keV C₆₀⁺ projectiles will illustrate the accessible range of experiments, including identification of sputtered species, ion-induced molecular fragmentation, ionization probabilities, and velocity distributions of sputtered particles. These capabilities are relevant to a broad range of applications, ranging from astrochemistry and organic materials to prospective studies of fusion-relevant materials.
In addition, the extraction beamline and target station at CRYRING will be introduced. Transmission measurements for characterization of the experimental setup, as well as first in-situ Raman studies of ion-induced defect formation in graphene, will be presented.
