Description

Over the past three decades, interest in nanoporous structures—including
single nanopores and nanoporous membranes—has grown enormously. Nanopores have
become powerful platforms for fabricating biomimetic channels, developing
model systems for exploring new nanoscale phenomena, and creating single-
molecule biosensors. Nanopores enabled DNA sequencing and progress has been
made towards protein sequencing. In the talk I will focus on the pioneering
role track-etched membranes played in the design and preparation of bio-
inspired ionic diodes, transistors, biomimetic voltage-gated channels, and
single-molecule sensors. I will describe experiments with polymer track-etched
membranes that led to the discovery of surface-charge regulated transport. The
talk will also include the newest results on using track-etched nanopores as
dynamic ionic memristors that mimic memory processes in the human brain.
