Travel Instructions to Ioannina
Access from Athens
By plane. After reaching International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” in Athens, there are connecting flights to the Airport “King Pyrrhus” of Ioannina. There are two flights per day. The flight lasts around 1 hour. Hotels can be reached from the “King Pyrrhus” Airport by taxi (~5 km).
By car. For those to experience the scenery of west Greece the option of renting a car is advised. Rentals can be found in Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”. The trip follows the Olympic Highway (Peloponnese) and the Ionian Highway (Epirus) covering about 400 km, taking around 4 hours, with an estimated fuel + toll cost of about 100-120 €.
By bus. For those opting for a bus, look for bus number X93 located outside the Airport arrivals between gates 4 and 5. Get a ticket from the booth in the same area (6 €). The bus will take you to the “Kifisos” central bus station (~45 min). Then get a ticket from the booth at Ioannina station (45 €) and get on the next bus to Ioannina (~ 5.5 hrs). Access from Thessaloniki
By car. For those to experience the scenery of northern Greece the option of renting a car is advised. Rentals can be found in Airport “Macedonia”. The trip follows the Egnatia Highway covering about 250 km, taking around 2.5 hours, with an estimated fuel + toll cost of about 60-70 €.
By bus. For those opting for a bus, look for bus number 1X / 1N located outside the Airport arrivals. Get a ticket from the booth in the same area (2 €). The bus will take you to the “Macedonia” central bus station (~45 min). Then get a ticket from the booth at Ioannina station (30 €) and get on the next bus to Ioannina (~ 3.5 hrs). Online reservations can also be made in KTEL Ioannina e-Ticket. Hotels can be reached from the bus station by taxi (~2-3 km).
Optional: In case a reasonable number of participants decide to fly to Thessaloniki, arrangements can be made for a bus to take them to Ioannina after their arrival. Same for their return to Thessaloniki.
