The HELPMI workshop will be a hybrid workshop with both virtual participation via Zoom (only for registered people) and in-person attendance, however, we strongly encourage everyone to participate on-site.
Goal of the HELPMI workshop
Besides presentations of the achievements (where data format, preview function and metadata sections come together) we want to:
- discuss a few examples of the list of terms (DDC) with respective community experts and sort out definition problems
- envision workflows of data standards (their practical use)
- your wishes for data analysis
- requirements for generating standard-compliant F.A.I.R. data containers
- for what use cases do you see the biggest reduction of (so far manual) workload
- what are the most common use cases
- talk about platforms where HELPMI can be continued
- THRILL, ELI, LaserLab-AISBL, NEILS, EOSC,
- discuss questions which have not been adressed like
- experiment geometry data
- new or more generalized NeXus classes for LPA experiments
Contributing to the HELPMI workshop
We invite you to submit abstracts related to the workshop goals or the goals of HELPMI in general. Here, any contribution from communities interested in the definition of metadata standards, as well as expertise on the glossary and ontology definition, is highly welcome. Additionally, we are looking forward to any contributions from the laser-plasma physics community on data management at each individual facility or the handling of LPA metadata in general.
More about HELPMI
HELPMI (HElmholtz Laser-Plasma Metadata Initiative) is a 2 year project of GSI, HI Jena and HZDR, funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration, which addresses the problem that no data standard exists for ultra-high intensity laser plasma experiments, hampering the FAIR principles and associated emerging benefits. We have
- adopted the NeXus standard as a hierarchical data container with plenty room for metadata and built-in preview functionality (example)
- extended openPMD, widely used for LPA simulations, for custom hierarchies (like NeXus)
- started a list of common terms in LPA experiments (“DDC”) as a draft of a glossary (and maybe later an ontology) (Zenodo, GitHub)

Organizational information
The workshop is free of charge. Neither HELPMI nor GSI will cover any expenses for travel and accommodation, nor take care of the organization of accomodations. An information on the available guest houses can be found here: Guesthouse
As the programme schedule has not yet been finalised, changes may still be made to the start and end times of the workshop.
