Description

Laser science and technology research and development (LS&T R&D) has always played an essential role in providing new capabilities for inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high-energy-density physics (HEDP). Breakthroughs like the burning plasma produced at NIF depend on conceiving new technologies, demonstrating them in the laboratory, and implementing them at facility scales. LS&T R&D at LLE currently focuses on broadband laser and optical technologies that can address two important applications.

  • High-power, ultrafast lasers can produce bright and compact radiation sources with photons ranging from THz to gamma rays, as well as energetic electron, ion, and neutron sources with both broadband and mono-energetic spectra. Such compact sources could be developed and implemented broadly for ICF and HEDP research with radiography, diffraction, and spectroscopy using multi-messenger probing. The Multi-TeraWatt (MTW) laser and MTW-pumped optical parametric amplifier line (MTW-OPAL) support laser, diagnostic, and physics R&D by staff, students and external users.
  • Broadband direct-drive lasers for ICF and HEDP promise to mitigate or even suppress laser-plasma instabilities that enable coupling more laser energy to experimental targets and significantly improve laser irradiation uniformity. The Fourth-generation Laser for Ultra-broadband eXperiments (FLUX) program aims to demonstrate broadband laser driver technology to mitigate LPI and improve irradiation uniformity.
