Description

Warm Dense Matter (WDM) is an exotic state of matter (P ≈ 1-10 Mbar, T≈ 0.1-10 eV), which lies at the the frontiers between condensed matter and plasma physics.  Such state is found in various astronomical objects such as giant planets and brown dwarfs, and the core part of the Earth and recently discovered extrasolar planets. WDM conditions are also produced in any laboratory experiment in which a solid is transformed to a plasma, for example during the early stages of inertial confinement fusion (ICF). The behavior and physical properties of this matter are still poorly understood, both theoretically and experimentally, and far from trivial to be numerically simulated.

Besides the challenge of perform macroscopic characterization of this matter in a large domain of the phase diagram using visible diagnostics, another of primary importance is study it microscopically using X-ray diagnostics (e.g. phase transitions, electronic structural changes, etc..).

After an introduction on the complexity of WDM description and characterization and its fundamental role in the planetology, we will present on overview of relevant results obtained by the PHYHDEL team of LULI on different laser facilities, responding to these challenges.
