We welcome you to the Tumor Hypoxia - FLASH Radiotherapy Workshop on June 26, 2023, at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research.
This workshop is co-organized by the Biophysics Department and industry partners Baker Ruskinn and I&L Biosystems, experts in designing, manufacturing, and distributing hypoxia workstations to culture and studying cell interactions under hypoxic or anoxic conditions.

This workshop will reflect on the critical importance of oxygen in the context of cancer progression and treatment strategies, with a special emphasis on particle therapy and the rapidly evolving field of FLASH radiotherapy, where tumours are irradiated at ultra-high dose rates. These timely research topics will be covered by prominent keynote and invited speakers, who will demonstrate the influence of hypoxia on the hallmarks of cancer and the dubious role of oxygen behind the FLASH effect.

The workshop will provide an excellent networking opportunity to learn how to mimic hypoxic tumour microenvironment conditions in cell culture laboratories and how these parameters affect in vitro radiobiology research. In addition, there will be a guided tour of the facilities of GSI and FAIR, which is one of the world-leading institutes for biophysics research with heavy ions for particle therapy and space applications.

We welcome abstract submissions on the key topics covered in this workshop (tumour hypoxia, its role in radioresistance, and FLASH radiotherapy), of which a limited number will be selected for oral presentations. Abstracts should be limited to 250 words.
