The COSY Cooler Synchrotron at Forschungszentrum Jülich supplied polarized (and unpolarized) proton and deuteron beams in the kinetic energy range of 45 MeV to 2.7 GeV to internal and external experiments in the period from 1993 to 2023. Until about 2014 the physics program concentrated on hadronic reactions and then priorities switched to exploring the possibilities for precision experiments in line with particle physics. Especially the use of the unique property of polarized beam and target operation of the facility was further expanded with the aim of executing and/or preparing tests of fundamental symmetries and possibly physics beyond the Standard Model. I will present an overview of the accelerator facility and the experiment installations. Many experiments that were executed at COSY are of double polarization type, that were utilizing polarized targets as well as polarized beams. The principle of the used polarized internal targets as well as preparation of the polarized ion beam will be presented. The main part of the talk will focus on the machine aspects relevant for polarization experiments in a storage ring, and developments and application of equipment for manipulation of the polarization.
