Special Colloquium in Memoriam Hans Geissel
- Welcome and Introduction by Thomas Nilsson (GSI & FAIR)
- Alex C. Mueller (ACM Consult GmbH, Mainz, Germany)
- A Journey with Hans Geissel Across the Land of Heavy-Ions
The eminent physicist Prof. Dr. rer. rat. Dr. hc. Hans Geissel is commemorated in today’s special colloquium.
Hans is world-renowned for his seminal contributions to an impressive and rather diverse number of topics. For instance, at the level of atomic and solid-state physics, these included basic contributions to the knowledge of the interactions of heavy ions going through matter. Together with his developments for charged-particle optics, this allowed him to build novel instrumentation with high separating and/or resolving power. He used these with his collaborators for fundamental discoveries in nuclear physics and astrophysics, yet also for application in space sciences and tumor treatment. His scientific heritage is the Super Fragment Separator SFRS. The mounting of the components of SFRS is underway at the FAIR facility in Darmstadt, and will soon open a new scientific vista.
The life-long research by Hans is overarched by the omni-presence of heavy-ions. My talk will make a journey with Hans to visit landmarks that he has erected in the land of heavy-ions and that constitute also the cornerstones of his successful academic career.

- Past, Present, and Future of Isotope Discoveries
The discovery of isotopes is only the first but necessary step towards the understanding of the nuclear forces that bind nuclides. Thus, it is the driving force behind accelerator improvements and developments of experimental equipment. Hans Geissel’s design of the Fragment Separator (FRS) opened up regions of the chart of nuclides that were previously inaccessible. Up to now almost 300 different isotopes and 100 different isomers have been discovered with the FRS. Hans’ tremendous impact and influence on the field of past and future discoveries will be discussed.
