Join us to attend a special lecture on Monday, 4 August, at the GSI Hörsaal, delivered by Prof. Carsten P. Welsch, Distinguished Professor of Physics at the University of Liverpool and STFC Council Member.

Titled “Hollywood Physics,” this talk will critically examine the representation of particle accelerators in popular films, separating scientific fact from fiction. Professor Welsch will offer a rigorous and insightful perspective on how cinematic storytelling engages with scientific principles.

Bio of the speaker:

Prof Carsten P Welsch studied physics and economics at the Universities of Frankfurt and UC Berkeley, completing his PhD in accelerator physics at Frankfurt. Following postdoctoral roles at the Max Planck Institute and CERN, he founded the QUASAR Group in 2007. Since 2008, he has been a member of the University of Liverpool and the Cockcroft Institute, becoming a Full Professor in 2011 and serving as Head of the Physics Department from 2016 to 2023. He has worked with and at GSI for more than 20 years.

Professor Welsch's research focuses on high energy colliders, antimatter physics, medical applications and accelerator optimization. He has made many pioneering contributions to novel beam diagnostic techniques, led six EU networks, training over 100 fellows, and directs two STFC Centers for Doctoral Training in Data Intensive Science.

With over 50 international events organized, numerous high-level advisory roles and extensive outreach experience, he promotes discovery science and influences international research strategies.
