Beschreibung

Negative ions are delicate quantum systems where an extra electron is bound to a neutral atom or molecule. The weak bonding and the lack of a long-range potential dramatically reduces the opportunities to perform spectroscopy studies on negative ions. Typically, the electron affinity (EA) is the sole experimentally accessible parameter. Laser photodetachment threshold (LPT) spectroscopy allows to determine the EA with the highest precision. Together with the ionization potential (IP) the EA defines the electronegativity and is consequently an important parameter to determine the chemical behavior of the atom or molecule. This allows to predict the chemistry of rare elements. The applications range from astrochemistry to tumor therapy with radioactive ions. Negative ions find further application in mass spectrometry, where laser photodetachment can be used as an additional element selective filter.

In this talk I will present the negative ion activities at Jena and at electrostatic storage rings like FLSR in Frankfurt and DESIREE in Stockholm. Further recent results from VERA in Vienna and an outlook into the activities at HZDR will be presented.
