In the comparison of the muon anomalous magnetic moment between the experimental measurements and the Standard Model (SM) prediction, the hadronic contributions from the strong interactions continue to be responsible for the bulk of the uncertainty. Lattice-QCD calculations provide a systematic way to calculate these contributions nonperturbatively and from first principles. In this talk I will discuss the efforts of the lattice community in this direction over the last few years and how they lead to a reduction of the uncertainty. Finally, I will review the comparison between experiment and theory after the very recent updates of both the SM and experimental results.
