Beschreibung

Intense photon beams from the brightest 3rd generation synchrotron radiation sources facilitate novel studies of the interaction of x-ray light with ionized matter in the gas phase. In the past decade, this potential has been successfully exploited at the Photon-Ion end-station at PEtra III (PIPE) for detailed investigations of inner-shell ionization and the ensuing deexciation processes in atomic and molecular ions. In my talk, I will provide an introduction to the physics of negative ions as well as to the photon-ion merged beams technique and then focus on recent results obtained with atomic C and molecular C2 ion beams [1,2].
