Description

SPECIAL SEMINAR! ATTENTION: Thursday, May 23, 11 AM

In this presentation, we demonstrate the versatility of the native frames technique in the study of the three-body dissociation of polyatomic molecules. From disentangling concerted and sequential dissociation for linear, planar and 3-dimensional molecules to elucidating the lifetimes of the intermediate electronic states of metastable molecular ions, we will explore the dynamics of simple molecules like SO2, acetylene and methane.  The results are from experiments performed at the ECR based low energy ion beam facility at IUAC, New Delhi. (Methane experiment was conducted at ARIBE, GANIL.) Selected ion beams collide with effusive gas targets, and the resulting electron-capture/ionization leads to formation of multiply charged molecular ions. We consider the dissociation of specifically triply charged molecular ions, whose fragments are detected in coincidence. The detailed analysis of the fragment momenta gives an insight into the dissociation dynamics of the multiply charged molecular ion enabling a detailed view into the processes following the formation of the multiply charged ion. The talk will be preceded by a description of the present and upcoming accelerator facilities at IUAC.
