Dear colleagues,
in view of the ongoing developments that strive to organize long term detector R&D within Germany and Europe (ECFA, NUPECC, KHUK) it seems prudent that locally at GSI and within the GSI/FAIR community we should work on and distill our interests, technological needs and intentions for the midterm and longer term future. Only with a clear and somewhat coordinated picture on the needs in our community can we express our stands to the outside and potentially assume a more active and visible role as a center.
With these words said, we would like to initiate such a discussion on strategy for the field of Gaseous Detectors (MPGD, RPCs, TPCs, MUSIC, high dynamic range heavy ion tracking detectors etc., Readout ASICs) for FAIR and GSI. We have had some discussions in this direction among some of us and it appeared intriguing organize a dedicated one day workshop where we could elaborate our needs and common strategy for this field. We would strive to have a written-up strategy by the end of December 2023.
