Description

The nuclear physics of stars governs stellar evolution and element synthesis in a large variety of scenarios. While tremendous progress has been made in the field during the last decades, there are still many mysteries which need to be addressed by nuclear experiments. In most cases the focus is on reaction rates or cross sections of nuclear transitions under stellar conditions, which are not known with the precision needed to bring simulations of stellar events to the next level and enable further conclusions.

At the GSI storage rings we aim to measure key reactions, which can only be addressed by radioactive beam experiments. These are highly relevant in explosive nucleosynthesis, where the extreme conditions facilitate nuclear reaction networks that mostly involve exotic nuclei.

In this seminar I will give an extended introduction into the topic of astrophysical reaction measurements and will then summarize our related efforts and achievements of the recent past at the GSI storage rings. Finally, some ideas on how laser-driven nuclear reaction studies might help to answer astrophysical questions will be presented in order to stimulate a discussion about goals and challenges in this relatively new approach
