Description

When molecular clouds collapse, stars surrounded by discs consisting of gas and dust form. From these discs entire planetary systems can develop. This model of planet formation got  convincingly confirmed by the discovery of by now more than 5000 exoplanets and amazingly detailed images of protoplanetary discs. However, there are several completely unexpected findings in planet formation, too.  Among them types of exoplanets completely unknown in our own solar system — like hot Jupiters and Super-Earth, and the structure within the discs. But also our own solar system provides riddles.  Thousands of objects beyond Neptune move on eccentric, inclined orbits not compatible with their formation in a flat disc. A recent surprise was the short visit of 100 meter sized Oumumua, a left-over from the planet formation process around another star. The aim of this talk is to provide the connection between this findings and how the shape the current understanding of planet formation.
