Description

High energy flash proton radiography is a technique that can serve as a powerful diagnostics for high energy density (HED) states of matter, material science and ion cancer therapy. Depending on the capabilities of the used accelerator, proton radiography can produce image sequences with ns spacing and ns exposure time, deliver a spacial resolution on the single digit um scale and resolve differences in density down to the 1% level. The PRIOR project at GSI aims at making this diagnostics technique available to a broad scientific community.

The PRIOR project itself has started 12 years ago as a collaborative effort of several international institutes (LANL, ITEP, IPCP, GSI). After the design, buildup and commissioning of the PRIOR-I prototype in 2014 it was observed that the compact permanent magnet quadrupoles chosen for imaging suffered from severe radiation damage induced by the high energy protons from the SIS-18 accelerator. Therefore, a complete redesign of the ion optical system employing newly developed ion transport codes was performed leading to a new facility (PRIOR-II) based on high gradient normal conducting electromagnets. PRIOR-II has been commissioned with 2 and 4 GeV protons during the 2021 run cycle of the GSI accelerator facility and demonstrated its capability of reaching the design goals in terms of spatial resolution. Furthermore, a dynamic commissioning with an underwater exploding wire setup (UEWE) has been carried out to demonstrate the temporal and density resolution capabilities. In the upcoming years, PRIOR-II at GSI/FAIR will become available as a user facility to the international scientific community.
