Description

The recent, first observation of a neutron-star merger confirmed in a
spectacular manner that these events are unique laboratories to test
long-standing fundamental nuclear physics questions. The wealth of data
provided by the electromagnetic and gravitational wave signals
convincingly support the idea of neutron star mergers being significant
sources of heavy elements in the Universe and allow to constrain the
nuclear equation of state with an unprecedented quality. In this talk I
will review our current theoretical understanding of the merger dynamics
and the various possible types of ejecta and will discuss the
nucleosynthetic and observable electromagnetic signatures of the ejecta.
