Description
Producing ions, i.e., stripping electrons from atoms and ions is a delicate and tricky process, which, depending on specific demands of a certain application, requires employment of special techniques. There are dozens of types of devices for producing ions, a.k.a. ion sources, available. Their spectrum, with every single one of them being optimized for a certain purpose, allows to produce every charge state of almost every chemical element. In this presentation, most common ion sources for production of highly-charged ions, namely Electron-Cyclotron-Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) and Electron-Beam Ion Trap/Source (EBIT/S) will be addressed. Their working principles and features will be discussed in details.
