The World We Live In - The Helmholtz Association and its Inner Workings within the German Research Landscape

I will try to take an impartial look at the Helmholtz association and the German public research landscape in general, and try to locate us within it. The goal is to enable everyone to understand all the buzzwords that are commonly being used, and to get a feeling for the structures within the Helmholtz association, their sizes, their interconnections and their inner workings. I will try to answer questions such as "how is our research embedded into the overall Helmholtz science?", "how is GSI embedded in the Helmholtz association?", "who has a say?", "where does the money come from?", "what else is being done in Helmholtz?" etc. I will try not to be boring by glossing over the nitty-gritty details and by looking at the scene from some considerable height.
