The $J/\psi$ radiative decay is believed to be an ideal place to study the light meson spectroscopy. BESIII collected 10 billion $J/\psi$ events, which is the world's largest sample produced from the $e^+e^-$ annihilations.
In this talk an overview on the recent progresses on the light meson spectroscopy will be presented, including the PWA of the exclusive $J/\psi$ radiative decays, the anomalous shape observed in $J/\psi$ radiative decays to $p\bar{p}$ and $\eta\prime\pi^+\pi^-$ and the strange mesons in $J/\psi$ hadronic decays.
