Description
The National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) is entering its final period of operation and is preparing for a transition to the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB). The current scientific program uses projectile fragment beams of three types: fast ions and thermalized ions for both precision studies and reacceleration. The recent progress in the area of beam thermalization will be presented with two new devices, a cryogenic gas cell and a reverse cyclotron stopper coming on line. The NSCL is also preparing for the transition from coupled-cyclotron operation to a state-of-the-art high intensity linac operation. Some details and a tentative timeline of the transition will be presented.
