Description
Following the shutdown of the Large Electron Positron collider LEP, CERN's activity focused on construction and installation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The CERN accelerator sector was restructured in the following years, and in 2006 the CERN-wide operation group moved from the local control rooms into the new central control room, marking the beginning of the LHC area at CERN. At the same time equipment commissioning activities started for the LHC, and by the end of 2009 the full proton chain from linac to LHC was operating with beams. Nowadays the accelerator chain delivers over 1E20 protons per year to its users and LHC operates at twice its design performance. This presentation will provide an overview of CERN accelerator operation as it stands today. The evolution of control system and operation tools designed for the LHC area will be discussed.
