Minutes of the PID-TOF meeting, Tuesday, 8th September, 2009
The meeting was led by Lars Schmitt, since Carsten Schwarz participated
due to an experiment at GSI by EVO.
Vladimir Vikhrov, PNPI St.Petersburg, TOF-TOF correlations and PID.
Vladimir simulated with Pythia and Geant3 the Channel pbar p --> Lambda Lambdabar X
at 15 GeV. Since there is not start counter the PID can only be performed by relative timing. He studied the relative time between different TOF counters. These
counters were the barrel-TOF, the forward-TOF and the left and right forward-TOF
within the Dipole gap.
Alexander Akindinov, ITEP Moscow, Progress in Panda TAG-TOF development by ITEP group.
Alexander showed the status and plans of an RPC prototype for PANDA.
Since the noise for an 2.5x3.5 cm2 pad at Alice dropped to 1Hz, it is possible to
use the RPC barrel as a fast trigger on eg. 3 charged particles. He showed the
mechanical setup of the counters and details of the attached electronic boards. The
PANDA-Root model is in preparation.
Bernhard Roth, RU-Bochum, Studies for barrel TOF with phi phi pi0.
Bernhard has chosen a channel of a possible glueball candidate, which has low
energetic kaons in the final state. As background channel he used
pbar p --> K+ K- pi+ pi- pi0. Assuming that all charged particles are kaons and
neglecting any PID he gets an background suppression of 10^7.
He only uses the EMC informations for the pi0, the remaining constraints are given by
the beam momentum of this formation channel.
He concludes, that no barrel TOF is necessary for this channel.
Vladimir Gapienko, IHEP Protvino, IHEP+JINR activity for barrel TOF in 2008-2009.
Vladimir showed an RPC-TOF with double sided strip readout. For an 4 gap counter
the radiation thickness is about 6% including FEE and cables. A 6 gap counter with
0.6mm glass plates ammounts to 7% radiation length. From a test experiment in 2008
the time resolution of the 6 gap counters is shown to be sigma ~ 50ps.
For double sided readout the position resolution along the strip is 1cm.
It was stated, that despite the progress on software and hardware many items are
missing (eg. physics case) which allow to decide if a barrel TOF is
desired or undesired.
