 f the phase structure of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditi
 ons of\ntemperature and density addresses fundamental aspects of QCD\, amo
 ng them the\nmechanism of confinement\, the origin of the spontaneous brea
 king of chiral symmetry and\ntheir importance for the generation of mass. 
 Dileptons emitted in collisions of heavy ions offer\nthe unique opportunit
 y to investigate the microscopic properties of strongly interacting matter
 \nunder such extreme conditions. This contribution discusses important exp
 erimental results in\ndilepton spectroscopy obtained so far by HADES. It w
 ill also address the tong-term goal of\nthis research at GSI/FAIR\, i.e. t
 he establishment of a complete excitation function of dilepton\nproduction
  from energies of 1A GeV up to 11A GeV with HADES and CBM.\n\nhttps://indi
