  Heidelberg University)\n\n   \nIn a time when the analysis of the mass 
 distribution in the Universe would favor massless neutrinos\, in contrast 
 with what the existence of neutrino oscillations requires\, the direct det
 ermination of the effective electron neutrino mass represents the stronges
 t method to constrain the neutrino mass scale. This method consists in the
  analysis of the endpoint region of electron capture and beta decay spectr
 a to identify tiny deviation in the spectral shape induced by the finite n
 eutrino mass. The ECHo experiment is conceived for the determination of th
 e effective electron neutrino mass through the analysis of the endpoint re
 gion of the Ho-163 electron capture spectrum. In ECHo\, large arrays of me
 tallic magnetic calorimeters enclosing Ho-163 are used for the high statis
 tics and high energy resolution measurement of the Ho-163 spectrum. The EC
 Ho-1k phase recently ended with the publication of the most stringent limi
 t on the effective electron neutrino mass obtained using electron capture 
 decays of m(v) < 15 eV at 90% C.I.. The detector system and the data analy
 sis leading to these important results will be presented. \nPresently the 
 preparation of the hardware and upgrade of the analysis tools for the next
  phase of the experiment ECHo-LE are moving forwards. With ECHo-LE a sensi
 tivity on the effective electron neutrino mass below 1 eV/c2 will be reach
 ed\, getting closer to the limit obtained with the tritium based experimen
 t KATRIN m(v) < 0.45 eV at 90% C.L.. The technical challenges which need t
 o be fulfilled for reaching this goal will be summarized.\n \n \n
