This special colloquium will honour the life and legacy of Hans Joachim Specht who passed away in May 2024. From his early years in Munich, where he discovered quasi-atoms and nuclear shape isomerism, to his 50 years as professor at Heidelberg University he left a profound mark on nuclear and heavy-ion physics. His pioneering leadership in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at CERN helped to deepen our understanding of the quark–gluon plasma. As Scientific Director of GSI, he oversaw Europe’s first clinical program using carbon ions for cancer therapy and laid the foundation for HIT in Heidelberg. He also guided the early planning of FAIR and advanced detector technologies with applications far beyond CERN and GSI. By shaping both the experimental agenda and the institutional landscape of nuclear and heavy-ion physics in Europe, he inspired generations of researchers worldwide.
