Description

The process of elastic photon scattering is a fundamental aspect of light-atom interactions. However, in a recent experiment, an unexpected, angular distribution of emitted photons was observed during the resonant scattering of linearly polarized x-rays on helium-like nitrogen ions. In this experiment, one observed the 1s2 1S0 + g → 1s np 1P1 →1s2 1S0 +g transitions for various excited states with n = 2…7, and paid special attention to the probabilities of the photon scattering either in parallel (W) or perpendicular (W) direction to the linear polarization vector of incident radiation. It was shown, in particular, that the ratio W/W is highly sensitive to the principal quantum number n of the ionic state 1s np 1P1 through which the resonant scattering occurs. In order to understand the observed phenomenon, we revisit the theory of resonant photon scattering and explore the impact of external fields on the scattering process, known as the Hanle effect. Moreover, we extend this discussion within the framework of the Gamma Factory. Here, we consider the resonant scattering of photons on a beam of ultra-relativistic ions exposed to strong Lorentz-transformed fields in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
