Is radiotherapy fading? (Hybrid seminar)

Abstract

Radiotherapy is commonly used in adjuvant or neo-adjuvant settings in several tumor pathologies. Recent clinical trials, however, have shown that adjuvant radiotherapy does not provide additional benefit but only increases toxicity. These results include common cancers such as breast, thyroid or colon cancer. We will discuss these data and will argue that these observations can represent an opportunity for strengthen the case for particle therapy, owing to its reduced toxicity and potential improvements in combined therapy.
