Historically, electron-ion recombination was the first fundamental atomic process in the Universe. It occurred 380,000 years after the Big Bang, made the Universe transparent for light, and thus released the Cosmic Microwave Background. Cross sections for the recombination of atomic hydrogen were calculated already in the early days of quantum mechanics. Nevertheless, the process is far from being understood in detail for arbitrary atomic systems. This often limits the quantitative understanding of cosmic and man-made plasmas. Next to their importance for applications in plasma physics, electron-ion collisions experiments at heavy-ion storage rings have evolved into a powerful tool for the spectroscopy of highly charged heavy ions. In my talk I will review the experimental approaches to electron-ion recombination, provide an overview over the major achievements, and point out future directions in particular at the GSI/FAIR heavy-ion storage rings during the FAIR phase-0 and beyond.
