Satellite observatories provide high-resolution x-ray spectra of astrophysical objects, which are used to reconstruct plasma parameters, like elemental composition, velocity distribution, density, and temperature. The accuracy with which these parameters can be extracted is often limited by the availability and uncertainties of atomic data for highly charged ions. This problem will be exacerbated with the start of the next generation of x-ray observatories, equipped with microcalorimeter detectors. We pursue two complementary approaches to laboratory x-ray spectroscopy, to provide atomic data for astrophysical applications. Firstly, we plan to use microcalorimeter x-ray detectors to investigate x-ray fluorescence cascades following charge exchange between ions and neutral gas at the CRYRING storage ring. Secondly, we use the compact PolarX-EBIT electron beam ion trap to provide targets of highly-charged ions for ultrabrilliant x-ray photon beams from synchrotron light sources. The results of recent resonant-photoexcitation measurements will be presented.
