The dynamics of particles in a circular storage device is usually understood in terms of single-particle: when the dynamics of one particle is stable that particle will be stored forever. In reality, particles interact with each other via electromagnetic fields generating a jungle of effects that ultimately may degrade the beam quality and beam stability. This talk will address the complexity of the physics of the high-intensity beams and the relation between single-particle dynamics with the dynamics of the beam ensemble. The interplay with the insidious nonlinear dynamics will be addressed as well.
