Crystal Channeling of Heavy Ions for Slow Extraction
Zoom
This event is an informal meeting following an expression of interest in a collaboration on crystal channeling for slow extraction put forward by Andrea Mazzolari (INFN Ferrara). The agenda focuses on the potential use of crystal bending for heavy ions in the context of slow extraction at GSI and FAIR. Possible applications would range from improvements to the conventional slow extraction (protection of septum wires, decreased losses, increased extraction efficiency) to crystal extraction. Such schemes having been successfully implemented in proton and electron machines recently, it is natural to ask whether they can be applied to heavy ion machines as well. However, while channeling of heavy ions is principally possible, the beam must satisfy tight constraints.
It is the aim of this meeting to evaluate the conditions under which crystal channeling might be employed in the context of slow extraction of heavy ions at GSI and FAIR. The meeting is intended to improve the mutual understanding of the areas of interest and expertise of each of the participants, with the aim of finding out whether there is a substantial basis for collaboration in this field.
