Description
I will briefly review the current understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements in the universe. This poses a problem at low metallicity - the amount of metals, in particular iron, as tracers of the age of the galaxy - where only massive star explosions could have contributed. However, the canonical scenario cannot yield heavy neutron capture elements, especially not those associated with the strong r-process. I will present an alternative approach that is related to uncertainties of hot and dense phases of matter found inside massive stars explosions.
