Description
Intense beams of energetic ions are a very efficient new tool to generate High Energy Density (HED) matter in the laboratory, using two completely different approaches. In one scheme, high pressure-high entropy states are induced in matter by direct isochoric and uniform heating of solid targets. The second approach, on the other hand, relies on shock compression of matter to achieve this goal. Such flexibility is not provided by any other driver, and is a unique feature of an ion beam. This talk presents a brief overview of the theoretical work that has been carried out during the past years to design suitable HED physics experiments for the FAIR facility. Recent progress in this work is also discussed. It is shown that in one proposed experiment, named HIHEX [Heavy Ion Heating and Expansion], which is based on the former scheme, one can generate different phases of HED matter using the FAIR beam parameters. Cylindrical [1] and well as plane [2] geometry has been considered. This experiment is suitable for studying the Equation-of-State properties of HED matter. The second proposed experimental scheme named LAPLAS [Laboratory Planetary Sciences], uses a multiple shock reflection scheme that leads to a low-entropy compression of a sample material. This scheme is suitable to generate planetary core conditions. Compression of hydrogen [3], water [4] and iron [5,6] has been simulated to study Jupiter-like, Neptune-like and Earth-like planets respectively. Moreover, proposals have been made to study hydrodynamic instabilities using ion beams [7]. REFERENCES [1] N.A. Tahir et al., Phys. Rev. E 95 (2005) 035001. [2] N.A. Tahir et al., Contribu.
