The organizing committee takes pleasure in inviting you to register for the 1st "Nordic Winter Meeting on Physics @ FAIR", to be held from March 22 through 26, 2010 in Björkliden, Sweden. Travelling days are March 21st and 26th. Registration is performed through the GSI Indico system reached from the conference web site: http://www.nordicfair.se The conference is organized jointly by scientists in the Nordic countries with major financial support by Nordforsk and the Swedish Research Council through SFAIR (the Swedish FAIR Consortium). The scientific program will start on Monday, March 22, 2010 which implies that recommended arrival in Björkliden is Sunday, March 21. The meeting ends on Friday, March 26 before lunch. Each full day includes two sessions, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon. In between these two sessions there will be a long lunch break to allow for discussions and outdoor activities. PRELIMINARY PROGRAM ------------------- The meeting will be directed towards the upcoming physics program and related theory efforts at FAIR, the Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Darmstadt, Germany. The scope of the meeting will reflect the broad research interest that is represented by scientists in the Nordic countries * Atomic physics * Hadron physics * Hot and dense matter * Nuclear astrophysics * Nuclear reactions * Nuclear structure and ground-state properties In particular, this scope is represented by the current list of invited speakers * Laszlo Csernai, Bergen * Alexandra Gade, East Lansing * Ari Jokinen, Jyväskylä * Takashi Nakamura, Tokyo * Witek Nazarewicz, Tennessee * Steve Olsen, Seoul * Rene Reifarth, Darmstadt * Boris Sharkov, FAIR director * Rob Timmermans, Groningen * Andrzej Warczak, Cracow * Andreas Wolf, Heidelberg CONTRIBUTED TALKS ----------------- A number of contributed talks (about 30 minutes) will be selected from the submitted abstracts. Transfer between Kiruna airport and Björkliden is arranged for Sunday (arrival) and Friday (departure) and is included in the conference fee. Activities: In addition, the conference fee for meeting participants includes an evening excursion by snowmobile to search for the spectacular northern lights, as well as a lunchtime activity of test driving a dog sled. VAT is included in the fee. Student financial support: We will be able to provide some financial support for students participating in the meeting. Please indicate your interest in this opportunity in the registration form. TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS ------------------- Björkliden is situated 250 km north of the Arctic Circle which implies that the journey here is part of the adventure. By air: The closest airport is Kiruna (distance about one hour). Flight connections to Kiruna are available from Stockholm Arlanda in Sweden. There are 3-4 direct flights per day with the carriers SAS or Norwegian. Alternatively, there are flights to Narvik in Norway. A shuttle bus between Kiruna airport and Björkliden will be provided on the day of arrival (Sunday, March 21) in the afternoon (probably multiple trips) and on the day of departure (Friday, March 26) connecting to the two departing flights at 12.45 and 13.45. Possibly there will also be transportation to the very early morning flight from Kiruna. Alternatively there is a train service from Kiruna (downtown) to Björkliden. By train: Going to Björkliden by train involves a spectacular (but long) journey through the Nordic wilderness. The train service Norrlandståget runs along one of Europe's longest train routes. If you wish to take the train, contact SJ, www.sj.se.
