GSI is currently constructing the FAIR facility. All primary ions except from protons shall be delivered by means of the post-stripper DTL section of the UNILAC. Accordingly, this post-stripper section is of utmost relevance for the performance of the complete FAIR facility.

The existing post-stripper section is in operation since 40 years and suffered considerably from material fatigue. Additionally, its design from the 1960ies cannot meet the requirements imposed by FAIR.

The aim of the review is to obtain to a decision on the type of DTL to be chosen to meet best these requirements and to assure reliable operation of this DTL section. Currently there are three options under consideration:

• an Alvarez-type DTL

• an KONUS IH-type DTL applying the longitudinal KONUS focusing scheme and transverse triplet focusing

• an synchronous IH-type DTL applying longitudinal constant synchronous phase focusing and transverse triplet focusing.

These options will be presented to the Committee in dedicated presentations during the review as well as a table comparing several figures of merits of the three options. All material will be made available to the Committee one week prior to the day of the review. The Committees impressions should be sketched briefly during a closing session. The recommendation on the DTL option should be presented in a brief final report prior to Nov. 2nd. This date is due to the meeting of GSI’s council on Nov. 4th.
