Description
The present status of the QED calculations of highly charged ions is reviewed. The theoretical predictions for the binding energies, the hyperfine splittings, and the g-factors are compared with available experimental data. Special attention is focused on tests of bound-state QED at strong coupling regime within and beyond the Furry picture and determinations of fundamental constants. Charge transfer, electron-positron pair creation, and X-ray emission in low energy heavy-ion collisions are considered. Parity nonconservation effects with heavy atoms and ions are also discussed.
