Description

Fusion as the ultimate energy source will be the key for mankind’s future energy supply. The quest for a high-gain inertial fusion reaction has been tackled by many groups world-wide. Changing climate and the request for a large amount of carbon-free energy has revived the interest in a faster path to fusion energy. For the intrinsic promise of high-gain, direct-drive fast-ignition has been studies for some decades now. The three main ignition schemes have been studied in parallel by research teams world-wide. Among electron fast ignition and shock ignition we have decided to follow proton fast ignition (PFI) as we believe the most credible path to a commercial power plant.

So far, every single experiment in PFI has shown the prospect of this scheme and often even performed better than expected.

We build on decades of studies on PFI as well as the knowledge gained by NIF, LIFE and the European HIPER project and started a privately funded project to build a facility in Europe.

I will present the concept and path forward that Marvel Fusion is going to pursue and the next steps we are taking. Marvel Fusion wants to invite the community to join their quest for a working fusion power plant prototype at the end of this decade.
